Green Building Pioneer Stephen Carpenter Joins CityCraft Ventures
We are pleased to announce that Stephen Carpenter, P.E., has joined CityCraft Ventures (CCV) to provide sustainable community and energy-efficient building design expertise. With over 30 years of green building experience in Canada and around the world, Mr. Carpenter is well-respected in the design community for his evidence-based approach to creating buildings that outperform their peers.
“I am thrilled to join CityCraft and apply my experience in sustainable communities and energy-efficient buildings to their transformative projects,” says Mr. Carpenter.
John L. Knott, Founder and CEO of CCV stated, “Stephen Carpenter brings to CityCraft one of the most prestigious leadership careers impacting the greening of North America’s built environment. His experience, passion and long-term commitment to improving the health of our buildings and cities adds unequaled expertise to CityCraft’s owner and leadership team.”
Prior to joining CityCraft, Mr. Carpenter served as founder and president of Enermodal Engineering, Canada’s largest green building consulting firm. Founded in 1981, Enermodal became the dominant green building consultant in Canada, designing some of the most energy-efficient buildings in the country. The firm grew to 120 staff with offices across Canada and in Denver, CO. Under the leadership of Mr. Carpenter, the firm championed some of the most innovative yet practical green building technologies in Canada, including rainwater cisterns, onsite biofiltration, radiant cooling, renewable energy systems, and variable flow refrigerant systems. Mr. Carpenter’s passion, speaking skills, and experience made him an effective leader of integrated building design teams. This design approach ensures that buildings actually achieve the energy or resource savings expected, and are more likely to meet the needs of building occupants as well as those of owners.
Mr. Carpenter was also an instrumental player in bringing the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system to Canada. He was the co-author of the LEED Canada manual and served as the first chair of the Canada Green Building Council’s Technical Advisory Group. He was named to the inaugural class of LEED Fellows in recognition of highest level of expertise and commitment to the rating system. Enermodal also played a key role in promoting LEED as a rating system, certifying over 270 LEED projects.
Some of Mr. Carpenter’s notable building and community projects include the Waterloo Region Green Home, Nova Scotia Power Head Office (LEED Platinum), redevelopment of Toronto’s Regent Park neighborhood (LEED Gold), RBC Centre office tower (LEED Gold), and Canadian Security Establishment Center (LEED Gold).
Mr. Carpenter led the design and construction of the new Enermodal head office in Kitchener, A Grander View, an energy-efficient office that uses 80% less energy and water than a conventional office. A Grander View achieved the highest level of LEED certification (Platinum) in three LEED rating systems. A Grander View won a variety of design awards, including North America’s Most livable Office (Center for the Built Environment) and the Canadian Consulting Engineer Tree of Life Award.
Mr. Carpenter’s contributions to the building industry have been recognized by many organizations and awards programs, including the Entrepreneur Award from the Professional Engineers of Ontario, Lifetime Achievement Award from Sustainable Buildings Canada, Canada Awards for Business Excellence-Innovation, and three technology awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). As a result of his many contributions to the field of energy-efficient engineering and the establishment of Canada’s green building industry, Mr. Carpenter was also awarded the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in the country, bestowed by the Queen’s representative, the Governor General.
In 2010, Enermodal Engineering joined MMM Group Limited, and in late 2013, Mr. Carpenter retired from his position at MMM Group.
Please join us in welcoming Stephen to CityCraft Ventures!
